Hump Day

Ta-da---Hump day.  Don't mean much after a person retires.  If I don't get it finished today, I'll just finish it tomorrow.  No big deal.  At this point we try to spend more time in preparing for the future.  We have done a lot this winter, but not near enough.  Which brings up another subject.  Actually same subject, just different point.  The Doomsday Preppers TV show.  I am going to parallel and agree with the same thing my friend Stephen said,  and add to it.   Some of them had 20 years of food and supplies built up and were still spending 40-80 hours a week working on it.  My thoughts.....spend a couple of hours a day and clean up the mess!  This group had built their compound out of metal shipping containers. They were testing solidness of the containers by shooting at the container with a 22 from 100 yards.  Hardly made a dent.  Wow.  Boy was I impressed!  Almost couldn't contain myself on this one. These people don't have a clue.  I'm sure that if someone chucking a little incoming at them it wouldn't be a 22. The funny part was that there was windows not 10 feet from where they were shooting.   On the second episode there were some people (liberal) that decided that they would not need guns to protect themselves in the event of   SHTF.  They are including their community in their plans and will provide for them also.  Spread the love.....right.  I am for all the love in the world, but love will not stop incoming!  Sorry, just thinking and rambling.  Then to top it off the network people "in the know"  come in with their expert comments.  All the economists that they talk to say there is little or no chance of the US ever suffering an economic collapse.  Hello, what rock have you been living under.    Damn liberal TV.   Just makes me feel like I wiped with sandpaper!  Very slim chance that California will suffer a major earthquake.  Hello again.  Same rock.  There was one family living on a ranch in Colorado (second episode)  that had it a little more together.  But still, why do you want to advertise all this on national TV?  Seems like they are just buying trouble.   Oh well not my problem.  Just some thoughts that bugged me.  I have more, but if I keep going I will need to take an atvian pill to settle me down!

Like I said before, we are not prepared enough for what may come, nor will we probably ever be.  If the cost of food keeps going up, it will be hard just to keep up with the present.  Yesterday while shopping I noticed that an 8lb jar of peanut butter that 2 weeks ago was almost $9, was now $14.52.  We had stocked up earlier, but not enough .  Every month we just try to add to our supplies.  Just "keep on keepin' on".

Everyone have a good second half of the week.  God Bless--johnnyb

Herman #2

I am happy to report that Herman #2 is alive and well and living in our refrigerator!   Herman #1 had perished last summer, but Herman #2 is doing well.  It is almost scary to have something alive in the fridge that you feed and care for.  Sounds like something from a Saturday Sci-Fi channel movie.  Makes you want to open the door slowly and make sure Herman hasn't escaped and is ready to devour everything in sight.  If I open the door and the light doesn't come on.........do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do. (Twilight Zone theme)

Not much going on here in the "middle of  somewhere".  Had another no accumulation of snow last night. That isn't exactly true.  We were supposed to get less than a 1/2" of accumulation!  Looks like there may be 3 or 4" of less than  1/2" accumulation.  Of course the wind had to come up and blow all of the less than 1/2" of accumulation into a drift on the walkways around the house.  But once again it is good moisture that we need.  I really don't mind the snow.  From now on most of the snow we get will not last long.  Not like getting a 2 foot snow in late November that will be here until February.  By this time of winter I am getting antsy and am wanting to get things going outside and I just have to be patient.  Carol got a Kindel for Christmas, so we have been getting some books read that we couldn't find at the library.  We have just finished Terawatt by Des Michaels and I am reading The Walk by Lee Goldberg.  .  Also The Old Man and the Wasteland by Nick Cole.  I am just throwing these up in case anyone would like to read them. This is not a book review just saying they are a decent read.  They are all books of a post-disaster nature.

I lost my train of thought there for a bit. Almost forgot what is was talking about in the beginning.   Back to Herman #2,  for anyone not acquainted with sourdough bread,  Herman is the starter.  I don't want anyone to think we are growing weird shit in our refrigerator to speed up TEOTWAWKI.  Herman is what some of the old-timers called the starter.  Can't beat home-made sourdough bread or other things.  Not only that it is  healthy.  Put a little real butter on it and it is like my manna from heaven.  Notice I said real butter.  We don't use the "plastic" butter.  It would be sacrilegious to put that on sourdough bread.  Flies won't even land on "maybe butter."  You just can't put the good stuff on an inch thick.  That may do damage!

Quote of the day--"It would certainly slow down the aging process if it had to work its way through Congress!"--Will Rogers

Only one more day to hump day.  If there is much you need to do in the first half of the week, you better hurry.  God Bless all--johnnyb

Thanks and Welcome

Thanks and welcome to Noelle for stopping by.

It is a nice clear, crisp morning after the storm.  It warmed just enough yesterday to melt a little.  Probably do the same today.

Hope this finds all well and may God Bless all.---johnnyb

Welcome

Welcome to the Feral Irishman.  Thanks for hitting the button.  Comments will always be answered.

Saturday morning and Welcome

Still snowing lightly.  It snowed lightly off and on all day yesterday.  Finally at dark it started snowing more and continued through the night.  Wasn't as heavy as west and north of here.  We maybe have 5" with some drifting so it is hard to tell.  Should diminish during the day.  It is a real wet snow.  Last night it was sticking to the satellite dish, blocking the signal.  Haven't checked this morning, but I am getting internet service, so I assume the TV is ok.

Dogs have been out playing in the snow.   The young one has been trying to get the  others to play, but they are more interested in getting the morning "stuff" taken care of and get back in the house!

Welcome to North.  Thanks for stopping by.

Hope everyone has a good week-end.  God Bless--johnnyb

Storm Update

The storm has been down-graded to just a winter storm warning.   Blizzard warnings still in effect about 50 miles west and into Colorado.  It has rained most of the night.  Supposed to change to snow later today. No accumulation today . 5-9 inches overnight instead of 12-16 inches.  Still be windy.  So I guess what will happen is that we will get very little snow or have 2 feet .   Last time little or no accumulation amounted to about 6-8 inches.

------ditditdaditditditdadit-------Weather flash----From the weather center in beautiful downtown ***** KS----- Rain has just turned to snow and is starting to not accumulate!  I will now return you to your regular scheduled programming.  Stay tuned for more updates as they are needed.

Meteorology would be an interesting field if a person didn't mind being wrong a lot of the time. I still think the weather rock on a string is the best weather machine.  It is always right.

You know you live in a small community if............

Yesterday while coming home from town we met the school bus on the county road.  I remarked that it was not the usual driver.  Carol remarked that she couldn't see who was driving.  My answer was that the driver waved different than the regular driver.  I thought about that statement after I had said it, and.......You know you live in a small community if you recognize people by their wave."  Just one of those quirky little things a person doesn't think about, it just comes with the territory.   (And I may add they generally wave with all their fingers! )

We have some weather coming tonite and tomorrow.  Weather radio sounded off at 5AM with a blizzard warning for tonite through Saturday .  We are on a dividing line where the heaviest snowfall is expected.  Up to 16 inches with 30-45 MPH winds. May not be pretty.  Not unusual though.  Our snows usually come horizontal.  Barbed wire fences do not block much wind, and jack rabbits lay their ears down.  Therefore the wind just speeds on across the flat lands. I have copied the following part of the warning:

* OTHER IMPACTS...THIS STORM IS EXPECTED TO CREATE HAZARDOUS IF
NOT IMPOSSIBLE TRAVEL CONDITIONS AND WILL ADVERSELY AFFECT ANY
  OTHER OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES.

Now my thought is this---how many outdoor activities are you going to plan in this kind of weather? Especially with a day or two notice.
