Sunday evening

Another beautiful day.  60 degrees and calm wind.  Next 2 days will be different.  20's and 30's.  Might get a little snow.  I dug some horseradish yesterday and was surprised that the ground was not frozen very deep.  Only a couple inches.  Most of what I dug was below the frost.  A friend who cooks at a bar in a little town near where we live makes good horseradish sauce.  His patch is pretty well dug through, so I gave him some of ours.  No sense in me messing with it when he will grind it and give a some back.   They have a prime rib night and use a lot of it.

We did our monthly major grocery shopping trip to a Wally World in a town about 20 miles north of us.  Almost the national debt, but not quite.  We will have some family visiting later this week, so needed to stock up on a few things.
Here are a few of the prices :
Milk-$3.62/gal
Earth grain Bread-$2.50
Cucumber-$.78 each
Bananas-$ .54/lb
Butter (real)-$2.98/box
Avocados-$.98each
Soy milk-$.2.67
Just curious on prices around the country.

I hope everyone has a good week.  God bless--johnnyb

Welcome and hello

Welcome to doublehomestead. My follow list has been playing tricks on me.  If I have forgotten to mention anyone I apologize.  If I have mentioned you and do it again, I resort back to my best excuse, old timers disease!  It is always good to see new people coming around.  I appreciate all those that do stop by my blog as I'm sure everybody does.  I have greatly enjoyed the friends that I have made over the past year and hope to continue to do so.  I have enjoyed the many different topics that are discussed the many different ideas that are expressed, ranging from politics to gardening, to food, to prepping, to sometimes just plain old down-home humor and fun.   It is nice to be able to see what people in different parts of the world are doing to improve their way of life and preparing for whatever may come in the future.

I appreciate each and everyone of you----God Bless all of you.  You are the best.----johnnyb

Day after hump day

Nothing new to report on this Thursday morning.  One request though---if anyone reading this that lives north of NW Kansas, will you please shut the North door.  The cold I expect this time of year, but the wind that you are letting through is a little ridiculous.  Tuesday was a beautiful day.  Shirt sleeves were almost the uniform of the day.  Yesterday was a little different. The rock on the string was sticking straight out.   Today not much better.  10 degrees this morning with ,as the weatherman put it, just "breezy" conditions.  Just seems like we have had more wind than usual.  Oh well, such is life living in the "middle of somewhere".

We have been spending the last couple of days going through stuff, rearranging closets, throwing away some things we don't know why we were keeping anyway.  We had a pile for the thrift store, but gave them to a friend.  You know-one person's junk is anothers  treasure. It's amazing how a person can collect some things.  For instance--paper clips that you can never find when you need one.  Pens that work, or pencils with lead in them.  I must have found 50 pens.  At least now I have a place to put all the pens, that is until a time down the road when I need one.  I found pencils with no lead.  Found lead.  Wrong size.  2 containers of the wrong size.  Oh yes, rubber bands.  Plenty of them now.  It is just nice to get things put in place.  Now if I just don't get lazy and  always put things away, it "should" stay that way.

Will be nice when the elections are over with this fall.  (Well maybe).   Seems like grown men and women should act a little more grown up.  I've seen kindergarten classes with more maturity.  I'm not pointing a finger at any one person.  I'm talking about the whole damn bunch that are in Disneyland North, or are aspiring to be.  I will stop there.   Much more I could say, but it would be better if I didn't.  Others can say it better than me.  I get too angry to make sense, so I will just try to keep things on lighter theme.

Thought for today--"I'd rather regret the things I've done than the things that I haven't."--Lucille Ball.

God Bless all and God Bless this great country we live in.---johnnyb

Welcome

Welcome to the latest to hit he follow button---Kym.  Happy to see her checking me out.  Well maybe.  She is my daughter, so I have to watch how thick I spread BS!   Not really.  She always believes everything I  say.....yeah right.  She doesn't have a blog yet, but I am trying to talk her into it.  We'll see.

Beautiful morning out so far.  Calm, cold, clear.  Should be nice today.  50ish.  Hope it stays calm.  I have some things I want to get done outside.  Tomorrow is supposed to be 30 degrees and 35 MPH winds.  Good day to stay in.

I was feeling pretty good about my New Years resolutions.  Going on 10 days and I couldn't remember breaking any yet.  Then it hit me.  I didn't make any.  I forgot.  Got point for early dementia.  (It's my story and I'm sticking to it). How many people really make New Years resolutions in earnest?  I'm sure we all have things that we honestly intend on doing in the next year to improve our ways of life.  There are plenty of things that I should do to improve myself, and some I may actually do.  But I'm not going to put it into stone of what I'm going to do.  Why add more stress.   It's bad enough right now.  Most of my picks on the bowl games lost.  I mean, how bad can it get.  I think next year after I make my picks, I should find a bookie and have him use them for his game, just go opposite of what I picked!  Maybe go for a percentage and I would be ok.  Good thing I didn't bet on any of them.  I'd have to hock the outhouse next door and then I would be up the proverbial creek without a paddle, or anything else for that matter.

We've been getting materials together to install a wood stove in the cabin.  Got some bricks last week for the base.  Carol saw an ad in a local internet classified for some triple wall pipe, 6 feet for $30.  I called to see if it was still available.  It was and he said if I would come and get it, he would just give it to me.  So another expense diverted.  Got a line on pallets.  We will be getting those over the next few months.  Some projects on the burner for those.  And the seed catalogs just keep coming.  So much to do, and can't do any of it till spring.  I will survive.  I just know I will.  I may be a blithering by April, but I WILL SURVIVE!  I am confident of that.

Thought for the day---"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new."---Albert Einstein.

God Bless all--johnnyb

Revocation of American Independence

Just a little humor to start the week:

To the citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II: In light of your immediate failure to financially manage yourselves and also in recent years your tendency to elect incompetent Presidents of the USA and therefore not able to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. (You should look up ‘revocation’ in the Oxford English Dictionary.) Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas , which she does not fancy). Your new Prime Minister, David Cameron, will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated sometime next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect: 1. The letter ‘U’ will be reinstated in words such as ‘colour,’ ‘favour,’ ‘labour’ and ‘neighbour.’ Likewise, you will learn to spell ‘doughnut’ without skipping half the letters, and the suffix ‘-ize’ will be replaced by the suffix ‘-ise.’Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up ‘vocabulary’). 2. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as ”like’ and ‘you know’ is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U.S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter ‘u” and the elimination of ‘-ize.’ ‘ 3. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday. 4. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you’re not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can’t sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you’re not ready to shoot grouse. 5. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. Although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public. 6. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour. 7. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly 10$/US gallon. Get used to it.) 8.You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar. 9. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. New Zealand beer is also acceptable, as New Zealand is pound for pound the greatest sporting nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth – see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat’s Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion. 10. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one’s ears removed with a cheese grater. 11. You will cease playing American football. There are only two kinds of proper football; one you call soccer, and rugby (dominated by the New Zealanders). Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies). 12. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America . Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the Australians (World dominators) first to take the sting out of their deliveries. 13. You must tell us who killed JFK. It’s been driving us mad. 14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty’s Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776). 15. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season. Off- Road Camper

I showed a picture of my dream RV a couple of weeks ago.  This is what  I will use for the close-by camping/fishing trips to area lakes,  or as a tow-behind on longer trips.  Will save a lot on gas, and good exercise.  WHAT A DEAL!!!
