Just sitting here this morning wondering if winter is ever going to be over.   I had to buy some wood pellets for the stove.  We usually don't have to use it much by this time of year.  We have used a little over a ton more than last year.  Aha--global warming.  I  need to remind myself to write Mr. Gore and thank him for informing us of that matter.  NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  What an idiot.  There should be a place for people like him.  Oh wait.  There is.  I think it is called Gitmo.  He would think global warming if he had to spend time there during the summer months.  Lost my train of thought and wandered off for a moment.  Flashbacks of a time past.

Anyway it looks as if we are going to have another taste of the white stuff.  Shouldn't last long.  Temps in the 50's by Friday. 

Hermit Jim had a post about CCC camps in the 1930's.  This pic is of a building put up as a WPA/CCC  project, afew miles from here..  The building still stands and is used today.  There was a State Lake there at one time and this was the shelter house.

 There is also an old schoolhouse next to our house that was built during that same period.  I thought I had a pic of it, but don't,  so next time.

MISSISSIPPI DECLARES WAR ON U.S. GOVERNMENT

President Barack Obama was in the Oval Office when his telephone rang."Hello, President Obama" a heavily accented southern voice said. "This is Jimmy Boy, down here at Bump's Catfish Shack, inVicksburg , and I am callin' to tell ya'll that we are officially declaring war on y'all!"
"Well Jimmy Boy," Barack replied, "This is indeed important news! How big is your army?"
"Right now," said Jimmy Boy, after a moments calculation "there is myself, my cousin Tom, my next-door-neighbor and brother Gerald, and the whole dart team from JD's Bait Shop. That makes eight or maybe nine depending if Bump can close the store.
Barack paused. "I must tell you Jimmy Boy that I have one million men in my army waiting to move on my command."
"Wow," said Jimmy Boy. "I'll have to call ya back!"
Sure enough, the next day, Jimmy Boy called again. "Mr. Obama, the war is still on! We have managed to acquire some infantry equipment!"
"And what equipment would that be Jimmy Boy?" Barack asked.
"Well sir, we have two combines, a bulldozer, and my brother Mike's farm tractor."
President Obama sighed. "I must tell you Jimmy Boy, that I have 16,000 tanks and 14,000 armored personnel carriers. Also I've increased my army to one and a half million since we last spoke."
"Lord above", said Jimmy Boy, "I'll be getting back to ya."
Sure enough, Jimmy Boy called again the next day. "President Obama! I am sorry to have to tell you that we have had to call off this here war."
"I'm sorry to hear that" said Barack. "Why the sudden change of heart?"

Well, sir," said Jimmy Boy, "we've all sat ourselves down and had a long chat over sweet tea, catfish, greens and pie and come to realize that there's just no way we can feed that many prisoners."

Spring (?) update

Winter just doesn't seem to want to give up its grip.  Monday was almost 80 degrees, yesterday was 21 degrees and high winds.  We missed the severe weather and blizzards that went through west of us.  Strange weather.  The weather has been pretty good for the past couple of weeks.  A little moisture but not enough.  I was able to get the fence rebuilt around the garden and got some of the early things planted.  Carrots, onions, and added to the garlic patch. The beets would have been planted if the weather hadn't turned nasty.  Carol added to her grape vines also.  It was a little early for them, but they were growing to much in the packages they came in.  We covered them well so they should be ok.   she also has some more asparagus and fruit trees coming, and more rhubarb ready to plant.  I think she is also going to divide some of the plants already established.  The horseradish is coming up good.  I probably won't dig any of it this year.  next year will be the year for it.  Usually every 2-3 years.  I will wait until September to see how it looks.  Should only dig it in months with an "r" in them.  I have a friend that makes the sauce, and it is good.  Some of the best sinus clearing medicine that exists anywhere.  We are also are planning to move our herbs and add to them also.  We are planting some of these things in cattle mineral tubs.  We can amend the soil to whatever we want and not have to be concerned about the hardpan clay.  We are kind of doing a lot of experimenting this year.  When the weather straightens up I will post some pics.
